What is IPTV and how does it work?
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a way of delivering live TV channels, movies and on-demand shows over the internet instead of through an aerial, cable or satellite dish. If you can stream Netflix or YouTube, your connection can already handle IPTV. This guide explains how it works, what you need, and the handful of terms worth knowing, all in plain English.
The short version: a server sends TV channels to a player app on your device over your internet connection. You get thousands of channels plus a big on-demand library, an on-screen guide, and pause and catch-up, on whatever device you already own.

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. "Internet Protocol" is just the standard way data travels across the internet, the same rails that carry your email and every website you visit. So IPTV simply means the television signal arrives as internet data rather than as a broadcast picked up by a dish or a coaxial cable.
That one change is what makes IPTV so flexible. Because it is data, it can be sent to any device with a screen and a connection, it can carry a huge number of channels, and it can bundle extras that old broadcast TV never could, like an interactive guide, a searchable movie library, and the ability to rewind a channel you missed.
How IPTV works
There are three parts to any IPTV setup:
- The server. The provider runs servers that hold the channel line-up and the on-demand library and stream them out on request. With VOLTIX, every channel is restreamed through our own servers with a generous buffer, so a wobble at the original source never reaches your screen.
- Your connection. The stream travels over your home broadband or mobile data to your device. Only the channel you are actually watching is sent, which is why IPTV is efficient even with thousands of channels available.
- The player. An app on your device receives the stream, decodes it and shows the picture, along with the guide and menus.
When you open a channel, your player asks the server for that stream, the server sends it, and the player plays it, all in a second or two. Switch channels and the same thing happens again. It feels just like normal TV, because to you it is.
What you need to watch IPTV
- An internet connection. Around 10-15 Mbps is comfortable for HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K. Our internet speed for IPTV guide has the full table.
- A device. A Firestick, smart TV, Android or Apple phone or tablet, a computer, a games console or a dedicated box, almost anything with a screen works. See the full list on our setup guides.
- A player app. Free apps like TiviMate, Smarters Player Lite or VLC, or our own VOLTIX app for Android. Each device guide names the best one.
- A subscription. This gives you the login your player needs. With VOLTIX you can start with a free 24-hour trial, no card.
Key terms explained
You will run into a few acronyms. Here is all you need:
- M3U - a single link (or file) that contains your channel list. You paste it into a player and everything loads. See M3U vs Xtream Codes.
- Xtream Codes - a login made of a server URL, a username and a password. It loads your channels, on-demand library and guide automatically, and keeps them updated. It is the easiest way to sign in.
- EPG - the Electronic Program Guide, the on-screen "what's on now and next" schedule. If it ever goes missing, our EPG fix guide sorts it.
- VOD - Video On Demand, the library of movies and TV series you can start any time.
- Catch-up - rewind a channel to watch something that has already aired.
IPTV vs cable and streaming apps
Against cable and satellite, IPTV usually means more channels on more devices for a lot less money, with no long contract, our IPTV vs cable comparison puts real numbers on it. Against a single streaming app like Netflix, the difference is breadth: IPTV brings live TV, live sport and a large movie and series library together in one place, rather than making you juggle several subscriptions.
